In Florida we have around 50 species of snakes. I thought there would be more honestly… but we’ve got some really BIG ones like Boa constrictors and Ball/Burmese pythons. Apparently, Florida’s climate is somewhat similar to Asia’s, so there are lots of snake and plant species that originate from Asia here and have become invasive. Cool to see them though.

Oh and prev! This is crazy, but something similar happened to my family just a few days ago! Lots of flooding and fallen trees due to the hurricane (Debby i think..?) Man, if it gets any hotter, I’m gonna fry!!

What’s mc1r and what do mutations there do?

Mc1r is short for melanocortin 1 receptor, a very important gene/protein in pigment synthesis. In color genetics, it's often called extension gene, too.

The molecule itself basically behaves as a switch: it determines if the cell produces eumelanin (black/brown pigment) or pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment) at any given moment.

In all kind of animals, lots of red, orange, yellow and pale color variants are associated with loss-of-function MC1R mutations, and, on the other hand, melanistic colorations are often caused by gain-of-function mutations. The OMIA database contains documented mutations in 48 different animals, lots of them with several different alleles.

Clown ball python, menil fallow deer, blond antartic fur seal, chestnut horse, white camel, red zebu - these are all MC1R-mutants.

Domestic cats however... well, they do have no less but three mutations on this gene, but the standard, wildspread orange that gives us red and tortoiseshell cats is none of them. (That would be on the recently identified Arhgap36 gene, famously sex-linked, unlike MC1R, which is autosomal and inherited independently of sex.) The mc1r cat colors are all relatively new and restricted to one respective breed; they are called amber, russet and carnelian.

Here’s the new and improved Orochi High snaracter lineup! A few things have changed (They’re sneniors! O-Hi is in Snokyo now! Truffle Amaguchi

Species: Ball Python (Silver Bullet Morph)

Length: 0.7 meters

Age: 18

Truffle Amaguchi is an ordinary girl starting her final year at Orochi High. She was born in Osnaka and moved with her mom and little brother to Snokyo two years ago.

Truffle is a romantic with very little real-life experience. She loves reading shoujo snanga, and has somewhat unrealistic expectations as a result. Her hobbies are reading, collecting bones and natural hisstory items, and going to the museum. Truffle does well in school, but has been struggling recently, putting her university hopes in jeopardy.

Truffle’s favorite snekcessory is a cute red bow with a mouse skull in the middle. She has a tiny kink on the tip of her tail.

Mochi Shinda

Species: Western Hognose (Wild Type)

Length: 0.5 meters

Age: 17

Mochi Shinda is a short Western hognose who was Truffle’s first friend at Orochi High. A mischievous prankster, she comes off as a bit insensitive but cares more than she lets on. She has been known to play dead to get out of unpleasant situations (like gym class).

Mochi enjoys cooking for her five younger sniblings and inventing new dessert recipes.

Mochi always wears a cool spiked taillet.

Marzipan Ono

Species: Burmese Python (Hypomelanistic Morph)

Length: 4.5 meters

Age: 18

Marzipan Ono is a big girl with big headboobs and an even bigger heart. Soft-spoken and shy, she does her best to stay out of the way but inadvertently causes accidents and injuries because of her size. Marzipan loves animals and has a pet bunny named Minchi. She volunteers at the local zoo. Her favorite animal to work with is Meg the giant ground sloth, who is currently pregnant and expecting a calf soon!

She wears a tiny pink bow on her tail at all times.

Atheris Hispida

Species: Hairy Bush Viper (Wild Type)

Length: 1 meter

Age: 18

The mysterious, venomous Atheris Hispida has always counted on his “tough guy” status to keep sneople at tail’s length, but when Truffle stumbles (literally) upon his deepest secret, he fears his reputation is at stake!

He wears his tie loose because he thinks it makes him look cool (it does).

Nise Ashinashi

Species: “Kingsnake”

Length: 2 meters 

Age: 19

Not much is known about secretive new transfer snudent Nise Ashinashi. He moved to Snokyo from Nagasnaki and he comes from a wealthy kingsnake family, but that’s about it. Nise keeps his cards close to his…neck? Or is he more tail? He has a distrust bordering on prejudice towards venomous species, though he is warming up to Yakamashii. 

Whatever you do, don’t steal his beanie, no matter how tempting it is. Ever.

Yakamashii Ogoe

Species: Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Wild Type)

Length: 1.2 meters

Age: 18

Loud, outgoing, and sometimes annoying, Yakamashii Ogoe is nevertheless Atheris’s closest friend. They grew up together in the same neighborhood and bonded over shared experiences (and tastes in video games).

Despite carrying a nasty hemotoxin in his fangs, Yakamashii is mostly harmless. He excels at sports and hopes to become captain of Orochi High’s successful Koudo ( 絞道 - "Way of the Wrap") team this year.

The O-Hi tail band he wears shows off his school spirit!

Monoko Mori

Species: Monocled Cobra (Albino Morph)

Length: 1.5 meters

Age: 19

Regarded as the most beautiful girl at Orochi High, Monoko Mori has many admirers. Despite being confessed to on an almost daily basis, she has turned down every single suitor so far. Though she is not unkind, her quiet demeanor and disinterest in dating have earned her the reputation of being cold.

Her striking albino coloration, while attractive to many, makes her sensitive to light and susceptible to sunburn, so she is often forced to limit outdoor activities.

Her hood piercing stands in stark rebellion against her otherwise pristine appearance.

Hachi Mitsu

Species: Ball Python (Bumblebee Morph)

Length: 0.8 meters

Age: 18

Unlike most of his peers, Hachi Mitsu seems to have it together. He knows what he wants to be when he grows up (video game designer), and he knows what he’s got to do to do it (get good grades and make it into the prestigious Snokyo Institute of Technology). He and Marzipan become fast friends after he offers to tutor her in snath.

He has a neurological condition called “the wobble,” which he inherited from his dad’s side of the family. He’s pretty good with a power chair, though–just watch your tail!

Hatchi has contacts, but prefers to wear glasses at school because he thinks they make him look smart.

Jun Aoki

Species: Emerald Tree Boa

Length: 1.2 meters

Age: 18

Jun is a striking emerald tree boa that lives with their grandmother in an apartment building near the coast. At school, they usually keep to themselves, doodling in the margins of their homework or painting elaborate landscapes in Creative Club after class. Most snudents consider them unusual and intimidating, but few have taken the time to really get to know them.

They enjoy collecting shells with their grandma and keep their favorite, a beautiful textile cone, on a cord around their neck.

New Wings of Fire sona wow wow wow

His name is Bulrush & he’s a Mudwing/Nightwing hybrid with xanthochromism, which is why he has a pale yellow complexion. I’ll put some more stuff about him below the image description :3

Bulrush is a very weak seer, his only ability is getting “feelings” of when bad things are about to happen. Basically there’s always a little hum of dread in his mind, which increases when in crowds, during conflict, right before events, etc. He doesn’t get visions but he does have nightmares, mostly of wildly unrealistic possible futures. He’s very pessimistic and antisocial, both because of his abilities and because he’s just like that. His anxiety and powers kind of merge into a weird mess of symptoms that can’t be differentiated from each other (e.g., his nightmares, increased dread when in crowds, etc). He works as an entomologist in the outskirts of the rainforest, identifying, cataloguing, and preserving insects. He lives in a small hut that’s closer to the Mud Kingdom, where he keeps all of his collections. He prefers the company of bugs and animals over dragons and has a pet Burmese python named Prince (based off of my ball python, Princely :3). Prince is his only official pet, but he often feeds the animals near his home and has names for them. He’s never met his father, a Nightwing named Snaketail, who left Bulrush and his mother when he was an egg. He has a good relationship with his mom, a Mudwing named Crayfish, and visits her in the Mud Kingdom frequently. I’m not sure what I’m going to do for him story-wise, but I’ll probably give him a Rainwing friend since he’s in the rainforest so much!

You have snakes? 🥰 what kinds? I'm not a huge fan of tarantulas though I get the appeal from others I just can't cause of bad experiences when I was younger. But snakes... those I adore

I do! I have almost 20 of them right now. I have reticulated pythons (that includes my famous Nagini who lives free in my house 24/7, doing whatever she pleases), ball pythons and scaleless corn snakes. I used to keep burmese pythons, several boa species, grene tree pythons, hognoses, rattlesnakes, vipers and some others. Snakes are simply amazing ❤️

You really have to know what you're doing though, with the bigger or venomous ones.

Alot of people wonder how they dragon tribes create hybrids. Are they the same species or different species? Because for example, a seawing is very different from a skywing, but im pretty sure i found a solid answer.

For example: Pythons, there are many different types of pythons. Ball, Burmese, Indian, Timor etc. Most pythons can breed with each other and create hybrid’s such as the Burm ball, Angry ball and Wall ball. Yes those are names. They are all still a python and can all still breed with each other, just different. Okay now put that on a dragon.

All still dragon, just different sub-species of dragon.

My headcanon for what 'pets' the AC Protags have:

Altair: He would definitely have some sort of 'raptor' rehabilitation or sanctuary. Maybe even a breeding program for endangered species he houses.

Ezio: Being from a rich family, I'd have to say he would be a 'horse girl' and would have quite a few on his family property. Maybe even show horses with prestigious pedigrees with a stallion he studs for profit. With a singular big draft horse he rescued that simply gets to enjoy top notch grain and oats and miles of green pastures.

Ratonhnhake:ton: He volunteers at an animal sanctuary where he can interact with bears, wolves, Bob cats, and mountain lions, but he has a pet hedgehog at home that he adores. Maybe even some domestic 'descented' skunks instead of cats. And a ferret or two.

Desmond: It has become my personal headcanon that Desmond would have various snakes, lizards, frogs, and amphibians as pets. Mostly he breeds ball pythons, as they don't get overly large and are pretty chill. He also has a variety of tree frogs, a leopard gecko with a bad attitude, and one giant albino Burmese python he had to build his second bedroom into an enclosure for. But his most memorable pet, if only because of its attitude, is the monitor lizard he found as a baby. It acts very much like a dog, if dogs could climb vertical walls and has hooked claws and a whip like tail.

Student Snake Assignment~!!

If Ruslan was a snake, I think he'd be a Burmese Python. Which is actually the same kind of snake Stefan is!! Burmese pythons are big and strong! For example, Stefan is 16 feet long and weighs around 175 pounds. They're also kind of the big version of the Ball python, who are just cute sleepy little guys who curl up into a ball... thus their name!

Oooh! Snoots! An Animal Shelter AU!

It honestly could go hard

Not that they keep track, but Gaz is out here doing the most adoptions. He's just so good at matching dogs and cats to people. He's so good at sweet talking the stubborn old ladies and the cranky "know it alls". He is so good with people but also still really good with the animals. Organized, efficient, takes excellent photos of the available dogs. Fosters cats, old, kitten, sick, all of them.

Soap is an Animal Services officer (animal control basically, i don't remember the differences). He's like everyone's favorite ASO. He's so good with the animals, he's good with the people, good with everything. Loves to foster some of the hospice dogs. Has a background in animal behavior. Definitely took home at least 3 snakes that got confiscated from a big bust. One of them is an albino Burmese python and the other two are the cutest ball pythons

Ghost is basically the behavior team at this point. He's so good with the animals, it's insane. He's the go to for everyone to ask to handle the behavior dogs (ones that are just very reactive, very scared, etc) especially the big dogs. Walks all the bite quarantine dogs. Helps the clinic with handling dogs for procedures and exams. Not well known that he's married to Soap. Is the guy people ask about when rats, ferrets, or any other odd creature like that comes in cause it's so rare. (This excludes rabbits and any like livestock/farm animal. I'm talking most rodents and reptiles). Tatted and pierced up on gah

Price is the one manager that is holding the place together. If anything happens to him, it's gonna be fucking chaos. He's the one everyone asks questions to, he's the one ordering supplies and shit. He's making sure everyone's doing their job, making sure the animals are healthy and taken care of. Offers to help with volunteer groups cause he knows those can be overwhelming for the one or two staff members in the volunteer department. Actually makes sure things get fixed, even if he ends up paying a bit out of pocket. Always uses the excuse "nothings too good for the animals". Hates doing the news segments though. Can't pay him enough for those.

We all know that Addie's mom was a rattlesnake royal that got jiggy with the burmese python royal courier. Although he looked pure burm, only his dad was pure burm and his mom was a ball python+green tree python hybrid, with visible hybridization so she stayed hidden.

Her parents consisted of a ball python mom and a visibly hybridized green tree python dad, whose parents had mixed rainbow boa parents. So on and so forth. The genealogy could go on but all in all there are at least 10-12 total snake species all intermingled in that fuckass line from decades of secret mixing... Addie's most prominent features are from those most recent family memebers but they also swim better than most snakes from having sea snake in them, and a good chunk of family that was just egg eaters for like 3 generations which is why that cropped up in them.

Donovan is home!

I had such an amazing day! I drove to a city about 2 hours away to pick up my new BP, who is almost a year old (and is seriously the chillest snake!). This photo does not do him justice, btw. He's SUPER bright yellow, though I saw his mom, who looks almost the same, and she has browned out a lot but still identifiably yellow. He is an Enchi Pastel Clown, and I am so in love with him already.

The breeder is a family operation, a dad an his teenagers, and they were so friendly and eager to show me their collection. I got to see a lot of truly amazing animals, including some really rare ball python morphs, as well as a snapping turtle, blood pythons, a Sulcata tortoise, a Burmese python, and a tegu! It was like so many of my dream reptiles, and I got to pet them and the whole time, Donovan chilling, being a very cool dude, exploring, and hanging out. This family has done a super job socializing their animals and they obviously care a lot for them. Most of their non-bps are rescues, and it was just nice to meet some local reptile people, because I'm so shy, it can be hard to meet like-minded people.

I honestly can't remember the last time I was at someone's house who isn't a relative, tbh. And reptiles aren't like dogs where you run into people walking the dog or at a dog park or something, you know?

Anyway, my family thinks I'm super weird that I like reptiles at all, or snakes especially, so it was very fun to meet other folks like me, and also to see all the adorable animals!

Hey reptile community, I need YOUR help!

Hello Reptiblr,

I am creating a searchable database of all reptile morphs that have some type of medical issue associated with them. Birth defects, an increased rate of a specific issue happening, neurological problems, skeletal deformities; you name it and I want to document it. The problem is; the reptile community is very decentralized and information is hard to find. This is especially true for newer/less well known morph projects and morphs that are not stateside.

Right now: I have already got the more common issues like the base spider ball python, enigma morph leopard gecko, lemon frost leopard gecko, and sunkissed corn snake. Cinnamon ball python and super black pastel have also been documented. i have also managed to track down some lesser known combos like the Lichen leopard gecko (contains the enigma morph) and Meteor (also contains enigma) but there is still a LOT more ground to cover.

i have been combing through forums and morphmarket but I still need your help.
